Quilting Club

THE ORIGINAL QUILTERS BEGAN IN THE EARLY 1940S IN THEIR HOMES. AS IT GREW AND THEY DECIDED TO QUILT FOR THE PUBLIC THE “QUILTING CLUB” WAS FORMED. IN 1942 THEY MOVED TO THE NEW BASEMENT AT THE 1ST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN SPRINGTOWN. THEY MET ONCE A WEEK AND BROUGHT A “COVERED DISH” WHICH WAS SHARED. THIS IDEA EVOLVED INTO A “PUBLIC DINNER” THEY COULD SELL ONCE A MONTH TO ACCOMMODATE THE HUSBANDS AND LOCAL BUSINESSMEN. IT GOT SO POPULAR THAT PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTY CAME TO EAT THESE FABULOUS MEALS. THIS TRADITION ENDED IN 1983. THE MEALS STOPPED BUT NOT THE QUILTING. TODAY THESE QUILTS ARE OFFERED AT THE LIVE AUCTION ON THE LAST SATURDAY IN SEPTEMBER, AT THE CHURCH, CELEBRATING “LORD’S ACRE” WHICH BEGAN IN 1965. THIS WONDERFUL TRADITION HAS BEEN PASSED DOWN FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION. STARTING ON THE TUESDAY FOLLOWING THE LORD’S ACRE THESE DEDICATED WOMEN START ANEW AT 8AM IN THE MORNING UNTIL 2PM IN AFTERNOON EVERY TUESDAY. THE CHURCH IS VERY GRATEFUL FOR THIS MINISTRY.
